UCSB Military Families Organization

May 8th, 2019

The SVO's Sister Organization

The enterprising VRC resident, Skye Wojciechowski has founded the UCSB Military Families Organization (MFO) to create a community for military-associated students. The MFO aims to provide a social outlet and support to military connected students.

The organization is still a work in progress but we're happy to welcome them and look forward to working together in the future.

Spring Updates

April 7th, 2019

Spring Quarter, 2019. Grab your allergy meds!

The first week of spring quarter is over and sun is returning to our soggy slice of heaven. After being reintroduced to all the rain we've missed for the last five years, hopefully now we'll get a chance to dry out and enjoy the sun. Be sure to dry out responsibly and use sunscreen.

Being that it's the last quarter of the academic school year I'll be adding the career services events to our calendar and plugging a few opportunities here on the main post. We'll highlight some of the programs and connections available to us at UCSB.

Important events to be announced

Our SVO elections are coming up soon, so start thinking about who you'd like to volunteer to a life of paperwork! Caveat, they will have to be students next year. We're also planning our veteran graduation ceremony so that's something else to keep an ear open for. More information to be released as it becomes available.

Gaucho Military Community Awards

March 15th, 2019

Nominations for Gaucho Military Community Awards are open!

Veterans and Military Services is pleased to recognize outstanding members of the military community through two awards programs. Nominations for these awards will be accepted from April 1-May 1 and can be e-mailed to VeteransMilitaryServices@sa.ucsb.edu

The Military Student of the Year awards are given to two students-a student veteran (to include active/Reserve/Guard service members), and a military dependent, for their character, service to the military-related community, and academic achievements. These awards recognize individual involvement in campus and community organizations, contribution to research and scholarship, and evidence of living by the UCSB Principles of Community.

The Military Supporter of the Year award is given to a staff member, faculty member, or administrator who demonstrates an exceptional commitment to advancing the interests of UCSB’s military-related student population. Selected by the Coordinator of Veterans and Military Services, this award recognizes an individual who has gone above and beyond in their service to military-related students during the current academic year.

End of Winter Quarter

March 15th, 2019

The end is near.

If you're reading this then you're probably staring down the barrel of finals week and entering a weekend filled with last minute assignments and studying. Hang in there and pace yourself! Also, caffeine isn't a replacement for sleep.

Good luck to everyone on their tests. For those of you free from the joy of finals then I hope your spare time is mired by boredom.

First graduating class for the Gaucho Military Support Network

The Gaucho Military Support Network is a new project designed by UCSB's veteran resource coordinator, Coby Dillard, and aims to educate staff and faculty on the experiences of our military-related students so that they can continue providing improved services. He hopes to eventually see at least one Gaucho Military Supporter in every department.

The first class graduated this week. These eleven individuals went through a two-hour training, including knowledge tests, that enables them to better understand your experience as a military-related student. Each of them was given a certificate and an emblem that identifies them, so ask for them when you visit their centers!

A March Update

March 6th, 2019

Mission Accomplished: Negotiate a larger veteran's center

After nearly a year of wheeling, dealing and official bribing, our wonderful Veterans Coordinator Coby has succeeded in negotiating a larger veteran's center. We'll be in the same building (434), Room 109. The move in date is forecasted to be sometime during the summer. At the moment the occupants of the room (a decaying tricycle and a disconnected tiny water heater) are being evicted and the room is being fixed up. We'll follow up when we have more information.

Dodgeball Tournament Results

Veterans were represented at the recent dodgeball tournament by the elite atheletic members of Ball of Duty. They put forth an inspiring effort but as the late night competition began approaching the bed times of some of the participants the team decided collectively to drop out, leaving them at 3rd place in a 16 team bracket. The team allegedly received a gold star for participation although no one was there to receive it.

Small Update!

January 31st, 2019

I cleaned up a few things in the display, added some better stand-in bios for the leadership and put in our own unique 404 page. I've also added the links for the mail button and facebook page link on the footer. A larger update will be on the way after midterms.

Winter Quarter 2019

January 23rd, 2019

This is the birth of the new UCSB-SVO run website. Everything is designed and run in-house by veteran students.

Our Vision: This website will serve as a one-stop source for UCSB student veterans and SVO members looking for links to school websites or forms. We'll post information on upcoming events, highlight some of our outreach and some of our members.

We'll also showcase any opportunities, work or support we receive from our members and sponsors.

The next stage of development for the website will be to:

  • Get pictures of the beautiful faces of our leadership for the profiles.
  • Convince the leadership to write a portfolio longer than four words. This may be especially hard for prior marines.
  • Find a good version of UCSB SVO logo to put on the page.

It's still a work in progress so bugs are possible. If you find any or have suggestions/comments please feel free to e-mail them to me at bsickler@ucsb.edu.
